Hi all,
The NHL season begins on January 13. There are two stages in finalizing our rosters:
A:
Waivers opens on Fri Jan 8. Any player with a salary over 2.5mil that you will want to have on your minor league team must clear waivers (anyone 2.5mil and under can go to your minor league team automatically). Even if a player was in the minors last season, and even if you sent him through waivers in the offseason, he must clear waivers once again from Jan 8 and on.
Players are on waivers for 48 hours before passing through to your minor league team. The waiver claims order can be found here:

B:
The deadline for rosters to be finalized/legal is two days before the season begins - January 11. That means:
1. Both amnesty buyouts must be done beforehand.
If you are not sure how many buyouts you have left, here is the list of buyouts:

2. You must be cap compliant. This includes players not being allowed to be on IR.
Once all rosters are legal on Jan 11, then the following day (Jan 12) IR will open up and you can get your team prepared for the first games.
EDIT: As per the results of the league poll, we will be getting rid of the rule not allowing IR at the beginning of the season. Players can be on IR at any point and won't count against the cap.
EDIT: January 11 is also the deadline to drop players who had expiring contracts this offseason and signed new deals. As of January 12, their new deals will kick in and you won't be able to drop them for free.
