Hey all,
Y'all are a bunch of knowledgable owners, and I need some advice on a trade in another league I am in. I would appreciate any input you can give. I respect everyone's opinion here as this is my most enjoyable and competitive league, so I know you all know your stuff. Dynasty league, standard categories. Nothing too crazy like we have here with contracts and salaries.
I give
Alexis Lafrenreire Tim Stutzle Bowen Byram Next Year 1st Rounder
I get
Connor McDavid Jake Sanderson
I mean it's McDavid. I think that's a lot to give up, but it's McDavid. The team I currently have is beyond terrible. It's been a long rebuild, and it's not over yet. Which is why I hesitate a bit, even with McDavid coming back. My 1st next year is likely in the 1.1-1.4 range.
I'm leaning towards taking it, just to have McDavid shares in a dynasty league, but would appreciate any advice haha

If your team is terrible, you probably need the depth. That said, you get the best player in the deal (and the league for years to come). There's no guarantee any of the players you are giving are going to be stars. I might try and get one more asset back like a prospect or draft pick. I would do it.

That's my thoughts too. It's a bunch of depth to deal but it's McDavid.
Thanks for the help!

Another version has me swapping Stutzle out for Marco Rossi and Dylan Cozens he then would add Drew Commesso and Mikhail Granlund. Not sure that's much better since I'm not sold on Commesso becoming much of anything, but I do like Stutzle more than Rossi/Cozens, but again, I think I might be giving too much depth again.

Those are two high first round picks you're giving up, and so I would be hesitant at first brush. But, your trading partner obviously covets your high end prospects and it's not like Sanderson is just a throw in. McJesus is still a couple of months away from turning 25 and manages to stay pretty healthy. But if you're in a rebuild, I can't imagine landing a much better foundation to build around. No guts, no glory. Go for it, unless you think your top two guys combined can outscore McDavid in the years to come. All this presumes you have the cap space to take him on.

With no cap it would favor mcdavid. But if your team is as bad as it sounds, you have a good shot at wright and consolation of a strong prospect + laffy + stutzle. If I was nearing being able to compete, with no cap, I'd do it. But if you're a few years away, I'd keep what I have. By then mcdavid will be late 20s and won't hold as much value as he does now. If you could snag wright, I don't think I'd give wright + laffy + stutzle even todqy unless I was going for the championship this year

I think it really depends on the league settings. How many teams? How do the categories work (points based like we are or most categories get the win, etc)? How deep are the rosters? In a standard 12 team league without insanely deep rosters, I'd take mcdavid and build around him. Sanderson's value depend on the league settings. He could be a multicat beast depending on the scoring system. Under certain circumstances he could be better than Byram. Lafreniere could be a 90 point player, or he could be Taylor hall. Stutzle could be another 90 point player, or Eugene melnyk could work his majic and ruin years of his career. Byram will always have makar in front of him, plus many other really good dmen to fight for ice time with. In a standard league, mcdavid is the surest thing this generation, and adding Sanderson makes it even better. If this is a crazy deep league with tons of teams, then we have what to talk about. In my experience with no cap leagues that have many teams, the key is depth, not superstars. You'd be filling a whole lot of roster spots with guys who could be stars in the very near future. Whenever I have joined one of those leagues (and I'd only take over a rebuilding team, no fun in taking someone else's great team), I take my superstars and trade then for 3 guys I think will break out and become at or close to that level in the near future. Although even in a deep league I'd try to push to get another solid piece added to mcdavid and Sanderson to deal with the loss of depth.

yeah this is a 20 team league, most cats get the win, not points based. Relatively deep rosters (40 players). I got him to add back Kirby Dach and we made the deal
Lafreniere + Stutzle + Byram + 2022 1st
for
McDavid + Sanderson + Dach
At this point, I think I come out ahead, as long as my 2022 1st falls outside the top 3. If it falls 2 or 3 I think I break even. If it falls 1.1 I think I slightly lose.

Getting dach was great for you. I'd put him behind laf and stutzle but he's no slouch. Nice trade!

Yeah adding Dach makes it much easier to digest. Nice job of negotiating!

McDavid and Dach might be the edge to get you out of that 1.1 area and into 1.2 or 1.3. Either way, I think you negotiated well and made the right move. Good work
