Hi all,
The NHL season is beginning soon. The last thing we need to take care of is the free agency draft. We discussed earlier this offseason what we would do, but since we have a few new owners, I will go over things here.
Usually, at the trade deadline (a week after the NHL's trade deadline), not only is there a stop on trades, but free agency signings are also closed. Trading opens up more or less immediately after the NHL season ends, but free agency does not open until we have a free agency draft for all unowned players (other than the current year's entry draft). We have a four round draft, and afterwards, free agency is open.
This year, things were different. When the NHL paused their season, we had quite a long time with absolutely no activity, since it was still mid-season (for all we knew at the time) and it was past the trade deadline. So in order to allow for activity in the league, we decided to open up trading and free agency. But there was confusion regarding college free agents and European free agents (IE players who were never drafted and signed contracts after the trade deadline). These players would generally not be eligible to be signed until the free agency draft. Some teams tried to sign them, while others said they would have happily signed them if they thoughts they were allowed to. It was agreed upon that we would hold a ONE ROUND FREE AGENCY DRAFT for these such players. While technically any unowned player who either has a contract or has been drafted is eligible, the non-college/European free agents have been eligible to be signed through free agency anyways, so no need to draft them.
I have been meaning to post this for a while but haven't had the time. I wanted to get started ASAP, but I think it's only fair to wait a few days. So let's say we'll start next Wednesday Jan 6 at 12 AM EST (Tuesday night - Wednesday morning).
12 hour time limit
Only one round, and then everyone is fair game (with the usual limit of one free agent signed per 12 hours).
Draft order is the waiver order, which resets every offseason based on end of regular season standings.
Montreal Pirates
Castle Rock Rage
Winnipeg Jets
San Jose Sharks
Seattle Kraken
Vancouver Canucks
Pittsburgh Penguins
Boston Bruins
Quebec Nordiques
Westsyde Wombats
Crease Kings
Inglewood Jacks
You do not need to draft anyone. You can pass. For those who know beforehand that they aren't participating, it would be nice if you tell us in advance so we don't wait out the 12 hour clock for no reason.
